Mysteries of the Autostart e50

So I got this engine because it was cheap and, I was told, running. Also, I was curious what the engaging mechanism was, since there is no clutch lever on these (thus the "autostart"). You just pedal and it starts immediately. It seems to defeat some of the point of having pedals at all, no? These also were, I think, the only e50's with the Mikuni oiler (like the Za50's have.) Upon opening it up though, it was far more different from an e50 than I expected. I'll put the pictures in order of taking it apart, so hopefully, it will make more sense.

That's directly under the clutch cover. The cover actually says "PUCH" on it and has the oiler where the engage lever would be. I'll have to find my pic of it. The gold piece, which mounts on a longer than normal crank, runs the oiler. What... isn't that clutch facing the wrong way??

Removing the clutch reveals it's welded to a small clutch bell. (side view of the clutch).

(Back view of clutch/bell piece and under it... ANOTHER clutch??)
Under this weird 2-shoe clutch/bell piece is another clutch bell, and, what's looks to be almost, a Za50-style 3-shoe clutch with very loose springs. This sits inside the 2-shoe clutch/bell and engages against it.

(The starter clutch and bell housing.)

(obligatory artistic moped shot... very Euro Nuevo.)

FAIL OF THE MONTH: Portland

This is a fail of a couple months ago actually. It's from Portland, specifically Uphill Battle. I think it was Joseph, though I may be wrong. The pics don't do a great job showing the full carnage, but you can see in the first one that the entire small end of the con rod is gone!!! Never before have I seen that.

Moped Project Update

Boy this is going to be a longer list than the first one. Here's a list of all the moped business I have going on. It kinda just acts as a laundry list for me later, but I thought it might be interesting:

Projects:
White Cobra Show Bike ---> This is what became of my 2 cobras (pictured in previous posts). I traded one of the bikes and now hopefully will have money to do the rest of what I have in mind for the remaining cobra. I already have the engine (built by Shaw), now I just need to repair the tank, get a pipe, and get it painted.

Torque Bike Maxi N ----> I don't even really know what to call this bike yet. It's so new to me. I picked up a black 1984 Austrian model Maxi N on the way back from Portland. Since I've been building speed oriented bikes, I want to build a hill climber beast this time instead. I just got my 10 tooth front sprocket in the mail, and I am working on the kit now. Let's see how fast I can make this bike do 12 o'clock.

Gila Back-up Engine ----> I'm not sure when, and I'm not sure why, but sometime... maybe soon, one of my engines is going to blow up. Hopefully by then though, I'll have this engine done so that I can just slap it on and roll. For this build, I'm going to report an engine I bought that was made for a small port metra. It's got the treats CDI on it already and a top crank in it. I'm going to be using the V-force reed cage and 24mm mikuni as well.

Portland and BEYOND...

The Woolly Bullies are mounting up, so to speak. A handful of us are packing our bikes up and trailing them up to Portland for Straight to Blackout: Gear for Torque. It should be a blast. Some of the original Woolly Bullies, Danny and Crystal, now rep for us up in Portland. Chris, Jose, Mike, Danny, and Crystal, all went to school in LA together. So, it will be a reunion of sorts. I'm taking my girlfriend's 60cc Maxi up to the Cutter rally, as it's super fun, and more importantly, torque-y. If it performs like I think it will, I'm going to get dropped off in San Franshiky and ride back with Woolly Bully Jose. I think it should be a blast either way. I'm packing up now. Water wings? Check. Invisible Dog Leash? Check. Spark plugs? Probably won't need it...

More on My Race Bike

Hey... so here are some more pics of the bike. This is is with the fairing on it:

Still let to do:
New Simonini (ordered)
Dual Stage Reeds
Caged bearings from a BMX bike
Vaportech
Number plate
New pedal Arms (one of mine is bent)
Downjet/ Tune more
Get custom rear sprocket (so I can stay in 1st gear for longer)
Lightened Magneto (in the works)

Oh, and I still have to get race leathers. Team Bully is currently entertaining sponsorship. If you'd like to sponsor us, email me!

At least I have my racing jacket. That's for next post though. It's pretty cool.
